Hass Avocado Tree
Avocado trees are a standout addition to any garden, prized by both home gardeners and commercial growers for their lush foliage and the promise of delicious, nutritious fruit. Whether you’re dreaming of making fresh guacamole or simply want to enjoy homegrown avocados straight from your yard, planting an avocado tree is a rewarding investment. One of the biggest advantages of choosing a grafted avocado tree is the speed at which you’ll see fruit production—grafted trees often begin producing creamy, flavorful avocados within just 2 to 3 years, compared to the much longer wait for seed-grown trees.
Among the many varieties available, the Hass avocado tree is especially popular for its excellent flavor, creamy texture, and versatility in the kitchen. Its fruit is a favorite for everything from salads to toast, thanks to its rich, nutty flavor and smooth, easy-to-peel skin. When selecting an avocado tree, it’s important to consider your local growing conditions, the specific variety’s characteristics, and your own preferences for fruit size and taste. With the right care and a well-chosen variety, you can enjoy a steady supply of healthy, homegrown avocados for years to come.
Why Buy A Hass Avocado Tree
When you buy an avocado tree for sale from Yardwork, you’re investing in the joy of harvesting your own fresh produce right from your backyard. Homegrown avocados are not only delicious but also allow you to enjoy fruit at peak ripeness. They are also compact and manageable, making them ideal for small spaces and container gardening. Yardwork offers only high-quality, grafted avocado trees, so you can count on reliable yields and healthy growth, backed by expert support and fast, careful delivery.
The Hass avocado tree is a favorite among home gardeners and commercial growers alike, and for good reason. Hass avocados are a medium-sized fruit with a creamy texture, starting with a green skin that darkens to nearly black as they ripen. This color change is a key indicator of ripeness and helps distinguish Hass from other varieties. Known for their rich, nutty flavor and dark skin, Hass avocados are the most popular avocado variety worldwide.
The typical harvest window for Hass avocados in California runs from spring through fall, giving you months of fresh fruit. Another advantage is that Hass avocado trees are self-fertile, making them ideal for home gardens—though planting more than one can increase your yield.
Other Avocado Tree Varieties We Offer
At Yardwork, we offer a wide selection of avocado trees for sale, including different varieties to suit every garden and taste. Our top-selling Hass avocado is prized for its creamy texture and rich flavor, making it a favorite for home growers. To maximize your avocado harvest, we recommend planting one Type A and one Type B avocado tree, such as a Hass (Type A) paired with a Fuerte or Reed (Type B), since many avocado trees are partially self-pollinating, but cross-pollination between these types increases fruit yields.
Explore our diverse range of avocado trees:
-
Hass: The classic choice, known for its pebbly skin and excellent flavor. Bears fruit spring through fall.
-
Fuerte: A hardy option with smooth skin and excellent flavor, often used to pollinate Hass. Fuerte avocados are cold-tolerant and can extend your harvest season.
-
Reed: Produces large, round, green fruit with smooth skin. Reed avocados are notable for their large fruit and bear in summer and fall, providing fresh avocados when other trees are out of season.
-
Mexicola: A Mexican variety with thin, edible, smooth skin and a unique anise flavor. Mexicola is cold-hardy and well-suited for California gardens.
-
Bacon: Developed in 1954, Bacon avocados are known for their light flavor and can be harvested while still yellow-green. Their smooth skin and cold tolerance make them a great choice for cooler climates, and they pair beautifully in Mediterranean-inspired yards with fruitless olive trees for elegant landscaping.
-
Nabal: Introduced to California in the early 2000s, Nabal avocados are round with high oil content, making them excellent for guacamole and prized for their rich, buttery taste.
Choosing The Right Avocado Tree For Your Climate
When selecting an avocado tree for sale, it's crucial to consider your local climate to ensure long-term success. Most traditional avocados, such as the popular Hass variety, thrive strictly in USDA Zones 9–11, making them ideal for much of coastal and inland California. If your area experiences frosts or cooler temperatures, opt for cold hardy avocado varieties, which can withstand temperatures as low as 15-20°F, making them suitable for cooler climates and expanding your planting options beyond the typical avocado-growing regions.
For regions prone to frost, Mexican-type hybrids like Mexicola, Fuerte, or Bacon are highly recommended, as they offer improved cold tolerance compared to other varieties. Always assess your yard’s microclimate, such as wind exposure and sun patterns, to further refine your selection.
At Yardwork, our consultations often include a thorough assessment of your local climate conditions. This allows us to recommend avocado trees and other mature trees for instant impact that will truly thrive in your specific environment, ensuring a healthy, productive landscape.
In addition to these, we offer other trees and specialty cultivars to meet your needs. Our avocados are available as organic or sustainably grown selections, ensuring you get healthy, high-quality plants, and we also stock a broad range of evergreen and fast-growing privacy trees to round out your landscape design. For more details on each variety, visit our full avocado tree selection.
Planting And Care For Avocado Trees
When planting your avocado tree for sale, choose a location with well-draining soil—avocado root systems are highly sensitive to standing water and require excellent drainage. Avocado trees do not tolerate flooding or heavy, soggy soil, so ensuring proper drainage is crucial for healthy growth.
To prepare the planting hole, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. Mix compost with the native soil you remove from the hole; this blend improves drainage and provides essential nutrients for your tree. Backfill with this compost-native soil mixture, making sure the top of the root ball sits slightly above ground level and the graft union remains above the soil line.
After planting, apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, but keep mulch several inches away from the trunk to prevent rot. If your site is exposed, provide wind protection for young trees to help them establish successfully. Many gardeners also pair avocado trees with low-maintenance olive trees for Mediterranean-style landscapes to create a cohesive, resilient planting design.
Feeding, Watering, And Soil For Hass Avocado
For young avocado trees, feed with a balanced, low-salt fertilizer to avoid salt buildup in the soil. The optimal time to fertilize is early spring, which supports healthy growth at the beginning of the growing season. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings to encourage deep root development. In larger landscapes, pairing avocados with hardy evergreens such as Carrotwood and similar structural trees can provide shade, wind protection, and visual balance.
Regular pruning helps maintain the shape of your tree and encourages better fruit production, especially for young trees or those grown in containers. Protect your avocado tree from strong winds and frost, particularly in the early years, and monitor for common pests like aphids. With attentive care and the right growing conditions, you’ll soon be harvesting your own avocados with creamy flesh and excellent flavor. For expert advice, soil testing, or help with planting and landscape design, Yardwork is here to support you every step of the way, so you can enjoy the satisfaction of homegrown avocados and a thriving, beautiful yard.
Whether you’re looking for large fruit, smooth skin, cold-hardy types, or container-friendly options, Yardwork has the right avocado tree for your landscape, including space-saving options like an apple tree 6-in-1 multi-grafted espalier for small gardens.

Yardwork was so great to work with. First they had the Swan Hill olive trees that we had been searching for, we had contacted several other nurseries without any luck previously. Then they answered all of our questions in a timely matter prior to ordering and finally delivered within a few days of placing it. Their staff is incredibly knowledgeable; they delivered and planted our trees with expertise to ensure that they would do well in our yard. We would definitely work with them again for future projects.
